“The Old Course View” St Andrews Links Golf Art

There are some places you never get tired of visiting (in my case, painting), and the Old Course at St Andrews Links is one of those places. A collector wanted a painting of the iconic view, but somehow different than the classic view of my previous paintings.

Last summer during our visit to St Andrews, I took a variety of reference photos. On a Sunday afternoon, I captured a drone view of the 18th green that also encapsulated the city and North Sea. And so for this painting, the collector and I went with this bird’s eye view of the iconic golf course.

I started with a basic composition sketch in charcoal, outlined in transparent red oxide.

Next, I added a basic color block. With this composition, it was a little more details than most of my paintings, but it helped set the foundation. Then, each layer was added to build up detail

Absolutely loved getting to create this painting with a refreshed perspective. While this painting belongs to a private collection, you can find limited edition prints of this painting of the Old Course at St Andrews Links here. Want to see a more traditional view of the 18th hole at the Old Course at St Andrews Links? You’ll love one of my first paintings with the traditional view here, and you can read about it in the blog post about No. 18 at the Old Course here.
