Everything you need to know about ordering a commission

You’ve got an empty wall in your home, but the thought of filling it with a Pinterest farmhouse “gather” sign just doesn’t do it?  Let’s create a custom painting that brings character to your home.

We’ll work together to make sure the canvas size, color palette and style fit perfectly.  Your commission is carefully crafted with the highest quality oil paints and archival linen or cotton canvas to last generations.

What to commission?  Your first hole in one.  Your daughter’s favorite toy as a baby. The chapel you said your vows.  Your 10 year old lab and hunting boots.  Pick a place or thing that brings you back to that moment in time that makes you smile.

I love working with collectors to create art that not only fills wall in your house, but creates a space in your home that you love.  Due to calendar constraints, I only accept a few commissions a year, so don’t wait!

the process

LET'S CHAT

You scrolled through the studio on Instagram.  You read the “behind the scene” posts on the blog.  And then you found your empty wall that needs some love.  Well, didn’t we just become best friends.

To get started, submit your information on the commission form below or send me an email at aimeesmithstudios@gmail.com.  Next, we’ll schedule a Zoom call to discuss your ideas.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM!

Keep an eye on your email a few days after the commission meeting for your new client packet!  This includes your quote, contract and timeline.  Then, when you’r ready to move forward, you’ll put down a deposit and we’ll get started!

LET'S GET THE PARTY STARTED

Once the details are confirmed, contract signed and deposit paid, the painting starts!  Depending on canvas size, details, and commission calendar, this can take a few weeks to a few months.  All the better reason to get on the calendar as soon as you’re ready.

SAY HELLO TO YOUR COMMISSION!

Once the painting is finished, you’ll be sent a final proof for your approval.  Then, the painting is then set aside to dry, as oils tend to dry slower than other paints.  Once dry, it’s carefully shipped and sent to its new home with a certificate of authenticity.  Options for prints to give as gifts to your friends and family is also an add on option.

frequently asked questions

HOW MUCH ARE COMMISSIONS?

Each commission is carefully crafted with high quality stretched canvas and handmade oil paints to create an heirloom that will last generations.  Each step is planned with your input along the way, customized specifically for you.  Due to the bespoke nature of commissions, the price is slightly higher than a painting that is already finished.

To get a estimate quote, fill out the commission inquiry above.

HOW LONG DO COMMISSIONS TAKE?

Each painting has many variables that can affect how long it can take to finish.  I also have a few collections on the schedule each year that can take priority.  After reviewing details of your painting and discussing what you have in mind, you’ll be provided with a estimated completion and delivery date.  A rush process can also be requested for special dates (hello, birthdays!).  Generally, each painting can take a few weeks for typical sizes to a few months for custom or larger sizes.

WHAT KIND OF COMMISSIONS DO YOU DO?

Over the years, I’ve painted a variety of subjects ranging from wedding gifts and portraits to still lifes and landscapes.  Now, I love painting with oil paints based in a traditional approach with methods used during the Renaissance by the Old Masters.  Currently, my style is based in realism with an occasional impressionistic influence.  Occasionally, a commission project may not be the best fit for my style.  If that’s the case, I’ll recommend a few artist friends who may be better suited!
