The Charcoal Sketch
It all begins with a blank canvas and a charcoal sketch, outlining the intricate details of the Weller Whiskey Bottle. This initial step captures the essence of the subject matter, setting the stage for what’s to come. I’m planning each whiskey painting to be able to be stand alone as single paintings and prints or together as a collection, and so the composition of each one can complement the others. The Imprimatura
A crucial layer in oil painting, the imprimatura adds depth and richness to the artwork. Warm tones are carefully applied in a thin wash of transparent red oxide oil paint and Gambol, creating a canvas that sets the stage for future layers.

Each layer is then added, starting with basic shapes and then working down to details.
