Buffalo Trace Distillery Tour

This past weekend I had the pleasure to paint on site at Buffalo Trace Distillery. I was able to finish my “Weller” whiskey painting, and I think it makes the painting even more special that it was finished on site of where this special whiskey is made. Click here to see the final painting, and if you’re more into prints than original art, you can find giclee prints of “Weller” here.

After the live painting, we were able to go on our first Buffalo Trace Distillery Tour! If you’re thinking about visiting Buffalo Trace Distillery, or just appreciate a good story, keep reading to learn about this unforgettable experience.

THE WELCOME

We checked in 15 minutes before our tour started and met with the rest of the group right before you walk into the gift shop. Here, our tour guide David, discussed the basics of the tour and rules to follow. He was extremely knowledgable about the history of the distillery, and kept the entire group entertained.

THE JOURNEY BEGINS

Our journey started in the Visitor Center, where David painted a vivid picture of the distillery’s origins dating back to 1775. The legacy of Buffalo Trace is steeped in history, with tales of resilience during Prohibition and the ever-present pursuit of crafting exceptional bourbon.

WALKING THE GROUNDS

As we strolled through the grounds of Buffalo Trace Distillery, we noticed how beautiful the entire place was. From the stately brick warehouses housing thousands of barrels to the barrel rolling tracks across our walking path, every corner seemed to have a story to tell.

THE AGING WAREHOUSE

The highlight of the tour, undoubtedly, was the visit to the aging warehouse. There, we walked into the earthy scent of aging bourbon, as David explained the intricacies of the aging process. He also discussed the life cycle of each barrel, from the type of wood sourced, to the charring, to what happens after it’s been used for whiskey. I learned each barrel is only used one time, and then the barrel is recycled for other purposes (made into furniture or sold for other purposes). We also were able to see the room where each bottle of Blanton’s is made, labelled and packaged.

SIPPING IN THE TASTING ROOM

Our journey concluded in the charming tasting room, where we were treated to a selection of Buffalo Trace’s finest. David guided us through a tasting flight that included classics like Buffalo Trace Bourbon and Weller. His insights into the flavors, aromas, and nuances of each pour elevated the tasting experience to another level. Freddie’s Root Beer is a nice surprise, and has become a favorite between my 4 year old and I on every live painting trip.

A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE

The tour guide’s passion and knowledge had brought the world of Buffalo Trace Distillery to life in a way I didn’t expect. From the rich history to the barrel-scented air and the informative tasting, I know can see why these tours are booked up easily.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Exploring Buffalo Trace Distillery was not just a tour; it was an immersion into the heart and soul of bourbon-making. The history, craftsmanship, and sheer dedication to quality at Buffalo Trace are truly awe-inspiring. If you’re a whiskey lover, adding this distillery to your bucket list is a must. Check out their website well in advance of your visit, as they tend to sell out soon.
