“On the River” O.H. Ingram Whiskey Painting

"Over the River" O.H. Whiskey Painting by Amiee Smith

I like a good story. And I LOVE painting one, especially when it’s tied to a rich history like O.H. Ingram Whiskey. That’s how my “On the River” O.H. Ingram Whiskey painting began.

A few months ago, I started thinking about painting a whiskey series. I was excited by the challenge of capturing the whiskey’s story and history on canvas. Then I discovered O.H. Ingram Whiskey. Aged on the Mississippi River, its distinct character is shaped by the humidity, temperature shifts, and the gentle rocking of the river. This unique process, combined with the Ingram family’s generations-long connection to the river, brought the painting’s concept to life, deeply intertwined with the whiskey’s story.

I reached out to the team at O.H. Ingram with the concept for the painting, and their hospitality exceeded my expectations. They welcomed me to visit the barge in Wickliffe, Kentucky, where the whiskey is aged, allowing me to truly understand the environment that shapes O.H. Ingram Whiskey, further influencing the direction of my “On the River” O.H. Ingram Whiskey painting.

For This O.H. Whiskey Painting:

I incorporated the rope and subtle moss to honor the Mississippi, choosing a dark palette to mirror the moody lighting where the barrels age.

After I added the base layers, I applied strong highlights to finish the painting, enhancing the contrast to showcase the bottle and create a dramatic mood.
