"Foxy" 14th Hole at Royal Dornoch
The Most Beloved Bunkerless Hole in Golf
While the history of Royal Dornoch stretches back beyond the 17th century, this Highland links course holds a special place in the hearts of golfers who have played here. And perhaps no hole is more beloved than the 14th, known simply as Foxy.
Foxy is one of the great bunkerless holes in world golf. It requires no sand to defend itself. Instead, the hole relies on the natural contours of the land, the rolling dunes, the wind off the Dornoch Firth, and the brilliant yellow gorse that frames the fairway. The green sits in a natural hollow that has been shaped by centuries of Scottish weather.
This 36 by 48 inch oil on canvas captures Foxy from an elevated perspective with the ocean visible in the background, the soft rolling dunes in the middle ground, and the iconic gorse in the foreground. It is officially licensed by Royal Dornoch Golf Club.
Foxy needs no bunkers to defend itself. The land does the work. It is one of those rare holes in golf where nature created something that no architect could improve upon.On the 14th at Royal Dornoch
Royal Dornoch Golf Club
Royal Dornoch Golf Club is consistently ranked among the top courses in the world. Located in the Scottish Highlands north of Inverness, it is one of golf's great pilgrimages. Tom Watson once said it was the most fun he had ever had on a golf course. Aimee has held an official licensing relationship with Royal Dornoch for over five years and has painted multiple subjects from the Championship Course.
The course was laid out by Old Tom Morris in 1886 and later refined by John Sutherland and George Duncan. It sits on a raised plateau of links land above the Dornoch Firth with views across the water to the mountains of Sutherland. The light changes constantly, and the course plays differently every day.
