Above the Clouds at Country Club of Little Rock
A Golf Course Above the Clouds
Country Club of Little Rock sits at an elevation that creates a phenomenon most golf courses never experience. On certain mornings the Arkansas River valley fills with fog and the course rises above it, looking out over a sea of clouds with the city barely visible beneath.
The collectors who commissioned this Country Club of Little Rock painting live in the community and see this view from their home. They wanted something that captured the scale and the atmosphere of those mornings — the early sun breaking through, the soft skyline of Little Rock in the distance, and the fairways glowing above the cloud line.
Established in 1902, the club is one of the most storied private courses in Arkansas. Its elevated setting in the hills west of the city provides sweeping views across the valley that are unlike anything else in the state.
When your home golf course sits above the clouds, I can see why you'd want it painted for your home. The subtle highlights on the course show the early sun about to break through, and the soft city in the background shows how this course is truly perched above everything.Aimee Smith, on the Commission
A Monumental Scale
At 4 by 5 feet, this is one of the largest commissions Aimee has completed. The scale was necessary to capture the drama of the scene. A smaller canvas would have compressed the cloud layer and lost the sense of elevation that makes Country Club of Little Rock so special.
The colour palette is built around the contrast between the warm sunrise tones hitting the course and the cool blue-grey of the clouds and valley below. Every fairway, every tree line, and every reflection in the morning light was painted by hand in oil on canvas.
The painting was created in the studio from reference photography taken on location at Country Club of Little Rock during early morning conditions when the valley fog was at its most dramatic.
