Royal Dornoch Golf Club is one of those courses that gets into your head and stays there. The 17th sits near the end of the Championship Course where the land flattens out and the Dornoch Firth stretches across the horizon. There is a stillness on this part of the links that is hard to describe unless you have stood there yourself.
This painting was created in the studio from reference photography taken on location at Royal Dornoch in the Scottish Highlands. The wide landscape format was chosen to honour the panoramic quality of the view from behind the 17th green, where the sky and the firth command as much attention as the hole itself.
Aimee Smith is an oil painter specializing in golf course landscapes. Royal Dornoch Golf Club is located in the Scottish Highlands overlooking the Dornoch Firth. The Championship Course dates back to 1877 and was shaped by Old Tom Morris and John Sutherland before later refinements by George Duncan. Widely regarded as one of the finest links courses in the world, Royal Dornoch has been ranked in the top 10 globally and is a bucket list destination for golfers everywhere. Tom Watson famously described it as the most fun he had ever had on a golf course.

Painting the 17th at Royal Dornoch Golf Club
If you have played Royal Dornoch Golf Club you already know the 17th is one of the most memorable holes on the Championship Course. By the time you reach it you are deep into the round and the landscape opens up with views across the Dornoch Firth toward the Highlands. It is the kind of hole that makes you pause before you play your approach.
Aimee holds an official licensing agreement with Royal Dornoch Golf Club and has painted multiple subjects from the Championship Course. This particular composition focuses on the 17th green and the way the links land falls away toward the water. The colour palette shifts between the deep greens of the turf and the muted golds of the gorse that frames the hole in summer.
The 24 by 48 inch landscape format was a deliberate choice. Royal Dornoch is a course defined by its horizons and the wide canvas allows the sky and the firth to play a role in the composition. The result is a painting that captures the atmosphere of standing on one of the great greens in Scottish golf.
This original Royal Dornoch Golf Club painting is now in a private collection. Officially licensed giclée prints are available at the print shop.
