No. 10 & 11 at High Pointe Golf Club
A Course Reborn, a Painting to Honor It
High Pointe Golf Club in Traverse City, Michigan has one of the most remarkable stories in golf. Originally opened in 1989 as the very first course designed by legendary architect Tom Doak, it was built with an unknown 26 year old's fierce conviction that the land itself should dictate the design.
The course closed in 2008, a casualty of the Great Recession, and much of the property was transformed into a hop farm. But the back nine — including holes 10 through 15, which Golf Club Atlas called "perhaps one of the best 6-hole stretches Tom has ever built" — remained untouched, waiting.
In 2023, entrepreneur Rod Trump partnered with Doak to restore and reimagine the course. Tom returned to personally shape all 18 greens — the only course where he's done so twice.
This painting was commissioned by the members as a thank you gift to the owner and as a celebration for the hard work so many have put into this place to bring it back to a high standard.Aimee Smith, on the Commission
A Gift from the Members
When High Pointe's members wanted to honor the people who brought this course back to life, they commissioned this painting, a 36″ × 48″ oil on canvas capturing the iconic 10th and 11th holes.
These are among the original holes that survived, restored by Doak himself with the same hands that first shaped them over three decades ago. Golf Digest named High Pointe their Best Transformation of 2025, and Tom Doak won his third consecutive Best New Course award.
The painting now lives in private collection at the club, a permanent tribute to the rebirth of one of American golf's most beloved courses.
