No. 18 at the Old Course at St Andrews Links
The Most Famous Bridge in Golf
The Swilcan Bridge at the Old Course might be the most celebrated crossing in the history of the game. Every golfer who has walked the 18th fairway at St Andrews Links has paused on that ancient stone bridge, looked back down the fairway, and understood the weight of where they are standing.
This painting captures the 18th hole at the Old Course at St Andrews Links from behind the Swilcan Bridge, looking back toward the R&A Clubhouse with the town of St Andrews in the background. The composition places the viewer exactly where every great champion has stood — on the bridge, looking out at the Home of Golf.
Created as part of an official collaboration with St Andrews Links, this 36 by 48 inch oil on canvas is now in a private collection. Officially licensed giclée prints are available here.
This is the origin of the game, golf in its purest form, and it's still played that way on a course seemingly untouched by time. Every time I play here, it reminds me that this is still a game.Arnold Palmer, on St Andrews
Where the Game Began
The Old Course at St Andrews Links is where golf started over 600 years ago. The Rules of Golf were written here. The Open Championship has been held here 30 times, more than any other venue in the world. Every golfer who takes the game seriously makes the pilgrimage to St Andrews at least once.
The Swilcan Bridge dates back over 700 years and was originally built as a crossing for shepherds. Today it is the most photographed spot in golf. Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods, and every Open Champion in modern history have crossed it on the 18th fairway of the Old Course.
Aimee holds an official licensing agreement with St Andrews Links and has painted multiple subjects from the Old Course. Explore the full St Andrews Links collection.
