A Paris Wedding

If there was ever a time to paint a wedding portrait based in Paris, France…during quarantine when you’re encouraged to not even leave your house would be it.

When Mandy reached out to me to paint a portrait for her wedding in Paris, I smiled the rest of the day. Mainly because their photos looked straight out of a wedding dream.

Sean and Mandy were married in Paris, France on April 1, 2015. Katie Donnelly Photography captured this gorgeous photo of the newlyweds on the Pont Alexandre III bridge. I loved the gold details, and we were able to use a little creativity to get the Eiffel Tower in the background.

I LOVE seeing the process for other artists, and thought y’all might enjoy them too. Here are a a few behind the scenes, starting with the composition sketch and base washes. While I’ve loved my thick, textured portraits from the past, I adopted a more classical approach and saved the texture for the impasto finish.

The details on this painting might have made me look up flights to Paris. Even in this crazy time.

Y’all. That might have been one of my favorites so far. I know I say that every time, but I mean it. I loved, loved, loved creating this romantic wedding portrait for Amanda and Sean. I hope it brings them as much joy as it has for me painting it.

Send me a message if you want to go on a painting trip to France in 2021. I’m officially inspired.
